420 N. Walnut is home to CREST, located just a few minutes north of Downtown Bloomington.
The IU Data Center is home to IU’s supercomputer, Big Red. Designed to ensure the safety and security of IU’s mission-critical information technology systems that serve all Indiana University campuses, this facility is the largest university data center in the state of Indiana, and one of the largest in the Midwest. The servers and data storage units hold more than 2.8 petabytes of information. The Data Center has a bunkered, concrete structure that is impervious to flooding, power outages, and even an F5 tornado.
Big Red II
Just like its older sibling, Big Red, the newer Big Red II is a technological feather in IU’s cap. Big Red II is the first announced system capable of at least 1 PFLOPS that is owned, funded, and operated by a university for the exclusive benefit of that university. Purchased from Cray for $7.5 million, Big Red II is expected to attract top-level faculty and researchers, research contracts, and grants. Big Red II will be available to both faculty and students after its installation in 2013. Big Red II will significantly outperform the original Big Red. While Big Red’s theoretical peak performance was approximately 40 teraflops, Big Red II will perform at 1,000 teraflops.

Energy Aware Laboratory
The constructions of the Energy Aware Laboratory was completed in March 2012. This facility is approximately 800 square feet on a 12 inch raised floor. There is a 208/120V 400A service dedicated for five computer racks and a 208/120V 225A service dedicated for equipment located on five workspaces/workbenches. A building grounding bar provides electrical grounding for this facility and air cooling is provided by a 30 ton Computer Room Air Conditioner (CRAC). There are five designated workbench areas complete with electrical outlets and network jacks. In addition, there is a movable/articulating exhaust hood to allow for a limited amount of soldering. The completion of the Energy Aware Computing Lab is a significant step forward in facilitating research in the understanding of power vs. computation and how to tune those parameters to achieve the most efficient results. In April of 2013, Dr. Danko Antolovic of Research Technologies was appointed as manager of the Energy Aware computing Lab and will be responsible for the management and use of the lab.
Seven years ago, Big Red became IU’s supercomputing flagship. At the time, Big Red was one of the most powerful university-owned computers in the United States. Although being replaced in 2013 by Big Red II, the earlier Big Red has a theoretical peak performance of more than 40 teraflops, and has achieved more than 28 teraflops on numerical computations. Big Red is a distributed shared-memory cluster, consisting of 1024 IBM JS21 Blades, each with two dual-core PowerPC 970 MP processors, 8GB of memory, and a PCI-X Myrinet 2000 adapter for high-bandwidth, low-latency MPI applications. In addition to local scratch disks, the Big Red compute nodes are connected via gigabit Ethernet to a 346TB GPFS file system, hosted o 16 IBM p505 Power5systems.
